It’s not exactly a secret that I’m a giant LUSH fangirl. Last time I was at a LUSH event was when LUSH Marion hosted us for the Bloggers United AU birthday celebration. On that particular occasion, myself and Felicia from Beauty and the Geek AU showed our competitive spirits and ended up winning a huge haul of LUSH products that I’m still working my way through.
So when I received an invitation to the opening of the new store in Rundle Mall courtesy of Promote SA, I was more than a bit excited.
LUSH’s Adelaide store has long been a place wherein I spend far too much money, but the tiny store always made for a challenging trip. More often than not you’d have to (as politely as possible) elbow your way through crowds just to get to the products you needed to grab. And forget about actually testing out and browsing products.
Second up for my “Brands that don’t suck” feature is Hourglass.
Known for their high-end and almost excessively luxurious products, Hourglass is not a brand for those of you on a strict budget. Their products are always high quality, but that quality comes with a price tag to match. In saying that, however, I find the products I use from them (apart from primers which I go through like nobody’s business) last quite a while. It’s also worth noting that Hourglass is a cruelty free brand, not owned by any parent company which is not, so they’re a good pick for those of you looking for brands that meet that criteria.
Hourglass is probably best suited to those of us who like more natural looks. Their products are all about bringing out natural beauty (barring their foundations which err on the full coverage side of the spectrum).
Many of Hourglass’s products are considered Cult favourites so let’s see if they’re really worth the hype.
Hi all! Welcome to a new series on the blog that I’ve been looking forward to writing. This series, succinctly called “Brands That Don’t Suck”, is exactly what it sounds like. Each post will feature a different brand that I’m a fan of for various reasons.
Now we’ve all been down this road before – a brand gets super hyped on social media, we go out and buy a product from them, and it turns out it sucks. This feature will try to help you avoid this problem. I’m not going to do blanket “everything this brand touch turns to gold! Praise them as the new Midas! They can do no wrong!” type thing because frankly that’s bollocks. Instead, I’m going to take you honestly through some pros and cons of their products and outline which, in my experience, are hits, misses or things I’m on the fence about because they’re good but not necessarily good for me. Naturally I can’t cover every product they do because my collection is not even close to that extensive, but hopefully I’ll at least be able to give you some idea of what to look out for.
The first brand I’m focusing on is one of the first high-end brands I ever bought a palette from: Urban Decay.
Hello lovely how-to-girls! If you’ve followed me for a while, then you’ll know that in April I received my first ever subscription box in the form of the Boxie April Box. As I have reviewed this before, head over to that review (linked above) to get my general thoughts on the overall customer service experience.
As a quick refresher taken from my last review:
“Boxie is a monthly subscription box that has only just been released in Australia. For $31.95 a month, you get 3-4 fashion, lifestyle or accessory items and 2-3 full sized beauty products. You’re billed on the first of each month and can cancel at any time.”
So that’s where we’re at. The boxes ship between the 15th-20th of each month. On this occasion, I think they were actually a little late to ship out for reasons I shall explain below. Mine arrived on the 29th of May.
Okay so I have a confession to make… I have a weird obsession with subscription boxes yet have never actually ordered one.
“But Steph,” you may argue, “How can you have an obsession with something you’ve never ordered?”
Well, dear reader, the answer is simpler than you think. I’m obsessed with watching unboxings and reviews, but too damn scared to take the plunge and order one for myself because I’m always scared that I won’t feel like I’m getting value for my money. Nevertheless, upon having stumbled across Boxie on instagram, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. Spoiler alert: I’m glad I did.
As a general rule, skin care on the whole makes my head hurt. Between the fifty thousand different pieces of advice out there, I tend to end up wanting to crawl into the corner and weep in the foetal position for a while. That’s why I’m a fan of products that do more than one thing (and if you saw the state of my bathroom storage, it would become abundantly clear why I feel this way). Hydra Gem by Kismet Jardin is one such product, so today I’m going to give you my thoughts as well as an offer you guys can make use of – hooray!
If you’ve ever sat through a job interview smiling broadly while internally screaming “please don’t notice that I have no idea what I’m doing”, then you’ll likely understand how I felt rocking up to the Bloggers United AU event in Adelaide recently. Blogging is brand new to me, and at the time of attending the event I was operating solely out of instagram with the intent to learn from the best and set up a “real” blog later this year. Little did I know that by meeting all the inspirational and lovely bloggers and brands around in Adelaide, I’d end up deciding to start a heck of a lot earlier than I’d intended.
If you’re a blogger in Australia and not already part of the Bloggers United AU community, I highly recommend you get on board. It’s a really supportive place, run by Jasmine and Nikita, who are both wonderful humans (actually, on that note, Nikita is currently raising money for the Whitelion charity and you should definitely go donate).
